The Soundtrack of our lives: Crit

After arriving a little late to the class…sorry! I quickly scanned the room and up on the walls and tables, I saw amazing images of the posters in blowup in large scale I was real impressed with everyone’s work. After scanning the room long enough that I have made myself feel a little bit insecure about my own work, I suddenly started to compare my work to everybody else. As a young viscom practitioner, I am very critical of my own work and extremely indecisive. I felt proud of the work that I did and went to uni to present my work   with no hesitation but later find myself wanting to run away haha! We all gathered around the tables and described what our work is all about, why do we created the designs in the way that they are and how does it communicate to the viewers.

Here I have created my posters design based around the songs that I have chosen. I know we’re missing one picture which is the one that will represent MGMT-Kids, I have actually done it but haven’t got around to take the picture for my blog which I thought that I did.

The first image represents the song Latch By Disclosure. I have created the images connecting to each other because the song is based around closeness and each characters have slight facial expressions because I personally felt that it adds bait of interest and story telling in a way without giving too much information. I have chosen black white and red (not orange) because I think they contrasts to each other well. I have chosen to create simple design of repartition of human like faces because when I first heard this song, I was at a night club surrounding with many people and in a way if you have seen the video of the music, you would see that there was this particular scene that there were two people surrounded in a room full of people and I guess I was trying to reference that from the video as well as from my own personal experience.

In the second image, I stuck to the theme of repartition for my poster series and created this poster with a feature of lips. This is because the song is based on romance and I associated lips with romantic things…it’s not as strong as I would expect it tone but after receiving my notes from everybody’s suggestions I intend to go back and produce some more posters but this time make it better quality and the visual impact of it all too.

The soundtrack of our lives: Song choices

1.) Disclosure-Latch Ft. Sam Smith

This song literally gives me goose bumps because not only it has got kind of an eerie feel to it but it was a very personal song that meant a lot to me and someone that used to be apart of my life and that person is no longer with me any more. I gotta give it to Disclosure and Sam Smith for creating such an excellent and well-crafted tune. I think that what’s great about this song is they took the traditional love song idea of, “let’s make this a serious, exclusive thing”, but they’ve given it this kind of weird, paranoid, obsessive undercurrent. “Latch” as a word can mean the way it’s used in this song, to be about latching up or tying the knot so to speak, but it usually has that much creepier, parasite connotation of “latching on to” someone or something.

So, in short, it’s a love song that’s about an unstable person wanting to lock down their partner so that they won’t have to be alone anymore, and really hyper-fixating on that aspect of the relationship.

2.) MGMT-Kids

This song takes me back, every time and I always get the deja vu feeling. I remember hearing them at a festival with all of my closest friends, it also makes me feel sad too because this song was a part of my youth and teenage year…which I can never go back to but I will always treasure the memories that comes with this song.

I think this song is definitely of the stages of life. You’re a child born so innocent in this world, with a beautiful smile that could make any parent proud. As you grow older you begin to lose your innocence & fall into societies ways. You begin to lose the meaning of whats important in life. & find that you learn from the world & especially learn from your parents, good & BAD. But the bad things you learn from those around you will only haunt you. To avoid this take only what you need from the world. Try your best not to become selfish as the rest of the world. I feel this songs represents a constant battle between good & bad, I feel like they’re speaking from experience. Trying not to get sucked up into the worldy possessions & selfishness of this place. Its a reminder to only take what you need from the world around you, nothing more nothing less. Be happy with what is given to you or fall into a life of unhappiness & obstacles..try to live your life the best way that you can & be the best person that you can, weather your life be hard or easy remember not to become corrupted of the things around you.

Wish I could explain exactly what I feel but words cannot describe everything I think this song means..it is a beautiful song & makes me tear everything I hear it…

3.) Lana Del Rey- Summertime Sadness

I don’t want to sound like Debbie downer or anything but any music that has a meaningful will always have an emotional impact to me and Lana Del Rey is certainly is one. I have always been her biggest fan, when I saw her live, it was INCREDIBLE! All her songs are beautifully written and poetic, the voice to me is like an angel. The lyrics are very sad and explicit in any of her music because she sings hostly about her life, especially her dark past, I always feel like wanting to give her a hug because this woman had such sad life but she did gained a lot go successes after putting her experiences into music.

In this song, she’s reminiscing about a love that she had during the time and it brings her “summertime sadness.”

This person is someone who made her feel electric, alive, and in love. She feels so invincible with this person that she could die and still be happy. Thinking about how much she loved this person and how this person may have been the best person she’s ever been with, it brings her sadness. “Even if you’re gone, I’m going to drive.” Yes, this person isn’t a part of her life anymore, but she relives her relationship with him by driving down memory lane.

Does anyone else hear “I think I’ll miss you forever like the stars miss the sun in the morning skies”? That makes more sense to me than “I think I’ll love you forever.”
“I think I’ll miss you forever
Like the stars miss the sun in the morning sky.
Late is better than never.
Even if you’re gone, I’m gonna drive.”
This is my favorite part of the song. It’s as if she finally realised how much she’s going to miss this person and has finally told them her true feelings. Even though he’s gone, she’s going to remember and honor how wonderful this time period of her life was. Beautiful…

The soundtrack of our lives: Experimenting

For this project, the task was to create a poster series, minimum of 3 posters (A2 size), pick three tracks and illustrates and represent the essence of how music that we listen to makes us feel. I was thrilled to do this project because it was something that I have not done before and I was really looking forward to explore my own creativity within this project.

Music is powerful. It can make us feel like we’re on top of the world, but at the same time it could also make us feel like the world is falling apart. To me, music makes me happy, emotional and expressive. I am the type of person who will listen to everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. I will listen to any genres of music with no judgement but just curiosity. I remembered when I was 12 years old, my friend dragged me to a hardcore rock concert and I lied to my parents that I was going to a classical type of concert. Needless to say, it wasn’t glorious and triumphant as I thought it would be. the concert was mental because not only I was too young to probably experienced a mosh pit, I was bloody scared and thought I was going to die. I went from a Taylor Swift fan girl to Linkin Park, My chemical romance, Nickelback, Fall out boy real quick. But despite my fears, it was an experience that will never forget. So yes, music is also like a time travel, our mind just filled with memories when we hear a certain songs.

Because I literally listen to everything, so in the beginning of starting out brainstorming my ideas, I found myself struggling because I don’t know what songs to choose. I looked through all the songs on my spottily list, and I just randomly picked out songs and started to draw how the sounds makes me feel. I did a little experiments of how the sounds that we hear creates patterns and I chosen three songs that are completely in different genres and experiments with listening to the sound and creating patterns through how relax, hard, soft, up beat the tones is of each songs and the results is really interesting.

I know, I know, this look like a three years old kid did these but unfortunately I did them (with a blind fold). This is because I wanted to just draw what comes up on my and just illustrates that informations on the papers. I didn’t want to focus too much on how the poster is going to look because at this point I was only just experimenting. I continued to listened to more songs but approach the designs more differently from my initial experiments. Here, I have illustrated an image that is somewhat, story telling.

Thinking it & Saying it: Zine

As the future professional creative communicators, communicating is very important and we must stay engage with the world around us. We need to be able to understand the link between Earlier in the beginning of this course, I was introduced to Zine making and watched Ciarian’s tutorial on how to create our own Zine.

The initial ideas that I have in mind, what I wanted to base my zine about was Aesthetic. This is because I feel that it was an important subject to address and interesting as we live in a society that everything is based and judge by our looks.

I began to drafting some ideas and making some brainstorms to try and justify what it is I want to add to my zine in regards to the theme of Aesthetic. I roughly added words such as face, body shapes and quotes from magazines, books, films, social medias, advertisement, etc because I personally believed that they all have a huge impact and influence the way we define aesthetic.

After a long consideration of constructing and planing my zine pages and the layouts that I want them to look I finally named the title of my zine ” The Struggle is Real”.  “The Struggle is Real” an expression used to emphasise the gravity of a frustrating circumstance or hardship, which is often used ironically online in a similar manner to first world problems. I have chosen this term as the title of my zine because its the term that everyone in my generation used a lot, especially when they refers to any type of flaws that they have with their own aesthetic. E.g. “My eyebrows is totally not on point, the struggle is real.” Not only the terms fits really well with the theme, I wanted my zine to be an easy read and using this particular term, I think that many people can relate to it.

The finished product

Here is just a few images of what I have created. In these images, they’re just my zine pages, when I took these I haven’t mounted them together because I wanted to see what they look like against each other before I glue them on. I do love the out come of it. I think the topics, text and illustrations that I have included in my zine are comical and relatable which I hope the people would enjoy reading as much as I do.
